And it’s not wishful thinking either because this is exactly what AI can deliver.


AI works by integrating data from multiple sources—weather satellites, vessel movements, and even historical fishing patterns—to create a real-time safety net. It’s like having a virtual lookout that never sleeps, scanning the horizon for danger and sending alerts when it spots trouble.



For Kerala’s fishing communities, these features could mean fewer accidents, lower insurance costs, and better financial stability. In fact, AI-powered safety frameworks could significantly reduce weather-related incidents, saving lives and millions of rupees annually.


But AI’s real power lies in its ability to prevent incidents before they escalate — whether it’s predicting an incoming storm or identifying a vessel at risk due to mechanical failure. 


Moreover, AI can help in search and rescue, raising timely alerts and helping coordinate missions to offer timely help.


By putting safety first, we can use technology and help fishermen do what they do best: head out to sea with confidence and return home to their families, livelihoods intact.

To drive home my point about technology, I would like to direct your attention to Japan and Norway.


Why is it that fishing communities in Japan or Norway face fewer risks at sea, while Kerala’s fishermen still contend with life-threatening challenges? Across the globe, AI has revolutionized maritime safety, and there’s no reason India can’t follow suit.


In Japan, AI-driven distress systems have slashed emergency response times drastically, giving fishing crews a fighting chance in life-or-death situations. Norway too has adopted AI-powered collision avoidance tools, ensuring safer navigation even in its icy, crowded waters. 


More than alerts, these systems guide rescue teams in real time, pinpointing the exact location of distressed vessels through AI-analyzed data streams.


So, what’s stopping India from adopting similar solutions? The truth is, we don’t need to reinvent the wheel. By learning from these global success stories and tailoring them to local needs, we can leapfrog past incremental safety improvements to achieve transformative change.
